Lott Cary was a pioneer settler and founding father of the new settlement of Liberia in West Africa for African-Americans, freed from slavery, for a homeland of their own. He fought for the survival of the settlement and became one of its poliitical leaders. As a Baptist preacher, he also established the Baptist faith in the territory. --Albert Wardin
