An excerpt from Cleve Brantley's letter we've entitled, "Pagan Proverbs"

28th Apr 2021

"From Russia: 'The devil comes to us while crossing the fields.' The meaning is the devil seizes us unawares. He comes when we least expect him, and when we are engaged in our most peaceful pursuits. We never meet him face to face. He comes from the right hand or the left, or from behind. If he sent us notice that he would tempt us at a given time, we might prepare. But he does not give us warning. When we are asleep he is most vigilant."
