As John Rippon drew his funeral oration for John Collett Ryland to a close, he prayed, “God grant that when we come to die, our defects may be as few as his, and our Christian virtues half as many. Amen.” According to Robert Hall, Jr., Ryland was “a most extraordinary man, and rarely, if ever, has full justice been done to his character.” These observations imply that the subject of this chapter remains a “must” for students of the eighteenth-century English Particular Baptists. --Peter Naylor
