A quote from chapter 7, "Higher Education Among Ohio Baptists" in our just released book - A History of the Baptist Churches in Ohio, 1789-1907, by Richard Clossman, edited by Patrick Kennedy and Terry Wolever.

"The Ohio Baptist Education Society, which began in 1816, barely maintained an existence until after the organization of the Ohio Baptist Convention in 1826. As the lack of educated leadership became painfully apparent among Baptists within the state, the Society sought to revitalize its purposes by meeting at Lebanon on May 3, 1830, during the gathering for the annual sessions, to reorganize and to rewrite a constitution. Meeting again in Zanesville the following October, during which the reorganization was completed, the Society then proposed to establish 'a literary and theological Seminary' in order to train ministers for Ohio." And thus, what would become Denison University began in 1831.
