Despite his struggles with pride, Martin was solidly correct on many matters. With few exceptions. . . , his thinking was consistent with his theology and with his understanding of the scriptures. The debates in which he engaged made him a formidable foe. Even in the infamous moment of his abruptly leaving the meeting to repeal the Test and Corporation Acts, history proved that the methodology that Martin would have proposed that evening was prudent. . . . If the Baptist minister could have been heeded at the meeting, it may have shortened the time to repeal. In this regard Martin may serve as a reminder to be confident in one’s stance, but humble in one’s presentation. --Blair Waddell
